I’ve always been envious of ‘shampoo girls’. You know – those lucky women who look like they’ve just stepped out of a shampoo advert and should have their very own hair-swishing theme tune.

Sadly, I’m not one of them. I once appeared as a hair model on E4 TV show Great British Hairdresser, and celeb crimper James Brown said my barnet made me look like an 18th century poodle (I think there was a mention of Louis XIV, too, but I was in a shell-shocked state). Disclaimer: At the time I had been given a modern mohawk (all done with hair extensions, thank God).

Yes, my naturally curly hair has always been wild, but that’s meant that I’ve picked up plenty of tricks in the quest to manage my mane! We all know a good cut is a must for healthy hair, but here are some other top tips to give your locks that ‘swish’ effect… 

Invest in a good hairdryer

Most people use a hairdryer at least every other day, so it really is worth investing in a good one. I’m looking for an upgrade and have my eye on the new Parlux 3800 Ceramic & Ionic Hairdryer, which is eco-friendly and has low noise emission (sure to keep your loved ones happy). If you’re buying a new hairdryer, check out the tried and tested reviews of trusted magazines such as Good Housekeeping. Also, make sure your dryer has a cool shot. Finishing your style with a blast of cool air will give a glossy effect without you having to splash out on expensive glossing products.

Boost your hair by eating the right foods

Forget pricey vitamin supplements – a healthy, balanced diet is one of the top secrets to healthy hair. Zinc-rich foods such as fish and eggs help to boost the protein keratin, which hair is made of.  Also, drinking water encourages hair growth – so get your 4-8 glasses a day. Nourish your hair with conditioning treatments

Okay, hair is technically dead matter, but it still requires TLC – especially if you’ve had lots of sun exposure or coloured your mop. Applying a protein-rich hair mask will help improve the condition of your locks.
